Dogs and Animal Welfare

Be a responsible dog owner

Owning and caring for an animal can be a source of great enjoyment. It is also a big responsibility.

The Council is responsible for dog control issues, including dog licensing, stray dogs, complaints about barking dogs and dog fouling.  The Council is also responsible for the welfare of certain animals and promotes responsible dog ownership.

The Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order 1983 makes provision for the licensing of dogs. Article 52 of the Order requires Councils to provide information relating to the operating of the Order as required by the Department.

Statistics relating to dog control issues in the District are provided by Councils on a quarterly basis, and are collated and held by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA).

The latest set of statistics are available to view on the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) website.
