MUSA improvements off the starting blocks!
The improvement of facilities at Mid Ulster Sports Arena (MUSA), including an 8-lane running track, are off the starting blocks this month as the appointed contractor, Tony Patterson Sportsground, commences works on site.
Mid Ulster District Council has received an investment of £1.2m through Sport NI’s National Lottery Funded Multi Facility Fund.
Thanks to this funding, MUSA will improve their facilities with an eight-lane athletics track, 3G synthetic pitch, floodlighting, fencing, and ancillary works.
Sport NI’s Multi Facility Fund, made possible thanks to National Lottery players, provides investment to create multi facility environments (with a mixture of indoor and/or outdoor provision) creating more opportunities for community participation in sport.
The project, designed by Mid Ulster firm McGurk Architects, will deliver a Track Mark accredited athletics facility, and a FIFA accredited synthetic surface for association football, complementing the existing high-quality facilities within the arena.
Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Eugene McConnell said:
“We are grateful to Sport NI and the National Lottery funded Multi Facility Fund for this significant investment, and it’s great to see the works started on this transformative project. By the autumn, the completed inclusive facilities will by helping our local communities to access opportunities to participate more fully in activity, especially in athletics and football, thereby improving the physical and mental health and well-being of Mid Ulster residents.”
Stephen Reid, Sport NI Board member and Chair of the Sport and Physical Activity Committee said,
“We are delighted to see work at the Mid Ulster Sports Arena get underway. At Sport NI we believe in the power of sport to change lives and with funding made possible thanks to National Lottery players these upgraded facilities will provide more opportunities for sports clubs, community groups, youth groups, schools and residents from across Mid Ulster to participate in sport and physical activity.”
Sport NI has worked closely with Mid Ulster District Council and Disability Sport Northern Ireland to ensure the design is fully inclusive and meets the requirements of the Inclusive Sports Facility Guidelines.
This project is made possible thanks to National Lottery players, who raise over £30m for good causes every week.
