Council to begin PAN Process for Maghera Wetland Park

Mid Ulster District Council is to begin the pre-application notice period in the process of developing a new Wetland Park in Maghera, which will bring more green space and place to the town.

The Planning Department have today been notified (Tuesday 10 September) that a major planning application will be submitted once pre-application consultation with local residents, community organisations and businesses has been completed.

The Council has successfully secured £9.1m from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities' Levelling Up Fund to support the regeneration of Maghera to include a town centre Public Realm Scheme, the redevelopment of the former High School site as a Business Park, and the creation of a Wetland Park.

Enhancing biodiversity through habitat creation will be a key factor in developing the wetland site as a quality green space. Other features for consideration will include a high-quality walking trail network to allow visitors to explore the site and experience nature; natural play areas for children to engage and play creatively in a natural setting; nature interaction points with integrated seating and platforms to allow viewing and pond dipping; the installation of a bird hide; a covered outdoor event space and picnic facilities; and a dog exercise area.

There will be a drop-in public information day on Wednesday 16 October in Maghera Leisure Centre, from 12pm to 8pm, where members of the public can speak directly to the team involved in the Wetland Park designs.

Following the information day, concept designs will be on display at Maghera Leisure Centre until the end of November and a dedicated website page will be available with details of the proposed development, where anyone can leave their feedback via email.
